An essay about errors and why you should make a lot of them

Our society is based on errors. We all make them now and then and if we didn’t we would never learn anything.

Some people have a knack of making gigantic errors all the time, while others tend to safeguard their chances a little more. They play it safe and never really get the hang of doing something wrong.

It’s my firm believe that the day we look back on life the universe and everything with conclusive eyes, we will find that it’s always the people making most errors who’ve come furthest.

This doesn’t always work with skydivers and the like of course, but generally speaking the more you fail the more you win. It sounds counterintuitive I know, but let me explain a little.

You see, every time you make an error you gain some experience, and experience enables you to make errors on an even bigger scale. Of course you need to actually learn something from your mistakes for this to work. If you don’t you’ll just be stuck doing the same errors over and over and never advance in the error-hierarchy. I know because I once made a new years resolution pledging not to learn from my mistakes and that turned out to be quite tedious in the long run.

Assuming that you actually learn from your mistakes, you’ll find that as you get more experience you also get a lot better at failing and minimizing damage. Some might say that the best way to minimize damage is not to start anything that might go wrong, but that’s not true. The best way to minimize damage is to have failed miserably a countless number of times before, so you know exactly how to land when you fall.

Eventually you will grow comfortable with being a puny human prone to flaws and one day you might even suddenly realize that what society looks upon as failures has nothing to do with making errors and mistakes. Failure in this world comes most commonly from not trying. If you dare to face the unknown, dare to keep trying and dare stumble a couple of times along the road, you succeed.

That’s why our society is based on error (and the people brave enough to make them)

Hi Jonas It is an old truth you describe in your essay here. You can divide companies in two types: 1) is those companies where errors are not tolerated, companies with a so called non-error culture and 2) companies where you are welcome to do errors, if you dont do the same error to many times, a risc culture which gives innovation. / Vagn P.s.
