Two days on Isle of Skye

Winter 2016-2017

Brian with whom I climbed Ben Nevis last year was passing by Edinburgh and dragged me on an impromptu road trip to Isle of Skye where we spent two days walking in the rain before heading back to Edinburgh

March 15th, 2017

Brian taking us north
Crossing the Forth
The Eilean Donan castle sitting and looking pretty
We slept in the van that night and passed the Eilean Donan castle on the way. It was ok
We picked up a couple of german hitchhikers and arrived to Skye in the TrekAmerica van under heavy clouds
Brian admiring the view together with our german hitchhikers. The weather had suddenly and dramatically cleared up
After dropping off the hitchhikers we went for a small walk up Quiraing on the north part of the island
The view south close to the trailhead
Heading up the small one-track roads
Surprised by the sunshine Brian ventures a smile
We had continued the walk along the cliff and were making a round trip out of it by walking back over the top of the hill to the right
It's a little hard to see in a photograph but the wind was blowing so hard it was difficult to walk straight
The view out over the coast near Quiraing
What looked like very heavy clouds were blowing over us coming from the west
It turned out to be hail clouds. The hail was practically blowing horizontally at us
Brian looking down on the Quiraing platform below
The view south once the hail had cleared
Looking south
Drive-by selfie taken from the van
We stopped by Stein to reserve a table for dinner before heading further west
Taking a look at the Dunvegan Castle from afar before Brian was attacked by an angry mob of sheep
We stopped by Neist Point, the westernmost point on the island
The wind was still going strong
A surprise hail storm was violent enough to bring Brian to his knees (in order to protect the back of his legs)
The lighthouse at Neist Point
Looking south shortly after the hail had cleared
One last peek at the lighthouse before heading for dinner
North Uist or the Isle of Harris can be seen far far away
The day after we walked out to an old viking archeological site. It was a very wet day
We were walking just south west of the Cuilins which can be seen hiding in the clouds
Brian smiling
Old Viking canal connecting a small freshwater loch with the sea. It was used for bringing in ships for the winter
