A typical storefront in Islamic Cairo, with a wonderful shopkeeper on his chair and with his tea.
We stopped by a pillowcase shop to look and before we knew it we were drinking tea and taking over their jobs.
Walking back.
Somebody had decided that these dunes looked perfectly suitable for a farm.
A few days later I went out again. This time in the very early morning.
The mosque and it's parking lot is lying just below me in the foreground
Two kids shared the experience with me.
The hill you can see in the background to the left is the temple of the oracle of Siwa where Alexander the great went to seek advice back in ancient times.
The structure of old Shali shows clearly in this photo, and if you look carefully you can pick out a few of the mud houses that are still inhabited.
At this point I was running up the hill to make sure to make it to the top before the sun went down.
Dusty green palm trees in the evening light.
The old town of Shali in it's ruined state. In the background to the left the lower hill pops up.
The view out towards one of the salt lakes and the white mountain.
Old unoccupied mud houses in the foreground and Gebel Dakrur in the background.
A few geese defended their dirt pile like nobody's business.
Farmer walking down the dirt road next to his field.
A piece of graffiti.
Sun rays and grass.
Typical architecture in the village.
Dunes after dark.
braided lines are suddenly interrupted by a slope.
Looking back on my own footsteps.
It's right about sunset and I've been walking in the sand for a few hours at this point.
Weatherworn dune
A small and terribly frightened puppy.
Grass in morning light.
A hot spring I randomly found on my path. I couldn't believe me luck since it was early in the morning and still fairly cold. There wasn't anybody nearby so I stripped off my clothes and jumped in for a refreshing swim.
Water resevoir with steaming hot water.
The oasis in early dusk.
Downtown Siwa at night
A fellow sunset-enjoyer showed up to take a look at the view.
The border between desert and fields.
The view out towards the great sand sea
The view out over the main part of the oasis, with a salt lake shimmering in the background and the desert behind me.
The desert is filled with old petrified sea shells
Some pipes on a dam sticking their heads up
The temple where Alexander the Great went to see an oracle many many years ago
I'm not sure if the chair was free to take, or somebody regularly sat there enjoying the view.
More posers are posing
Coming back through the same back-alley, my new friends wanted another photo
I took this photo because of the wonderful colors of the triangles by the roof.
Old wooden door
Mud-houses
Two new friends from a back alley wanted a photo
Writing on a wall
I'm not making it up. I was indeed standing on the mountain of the dead in the photo before.
Green wavy grass in between date palms
The desert meets the oasis at the mountain of the dead.
Walking in the plantations.
A rustic door handle
Details from a mud-mosque
The view from the top of the fortress out over the old mud-village of Shali, now mostly in ruins (after that same rain-shower that brought the fortress down)
Hatshepsut's temple after closing time. I managed to sneak in and made it this far before I got stopped and had to pay 5 pounds as a bribe to a guy who insisted that I by no means could come any closer.
Hatshepsut's temple in the early dusk.
The ruins of the glorious mud-fortress of Shali can be seen from the main market square of Siwa. The fortress fell to an occasional rain-shower, which to a Dane like me seems like the most meager of reasons to fall.
Heading home in the late afternoon.
More candy and plenty of dolls
Illuminated stall with candy at the side of the main street
Superflous chairs at the roadside.
Egyptian Souvenirs from the souk
Two of the many groups of tourists roaming about the Luxor Temple.

Hieroglyphs
Two statues with heads and one without a head.
A pharao in front of the Luxor temple
The square in front of the luxor temple where Egyptian families would picnic in the afternoon.
Two tourists are transported around by carriage. Most of the carriages would idle around the streets with their drivers desperate for customers offering rides to anywhere for 5 egyptian pounds.
A donkey standing around with nothing to do. It's a tough life being a donkey.
