Bagan on the first day

Myanmar

The ancient Burmese Capital of Bagan was raided by an invading army some thousand years ago, and all that is left is all the countless pagodas spread out over the country-side with fields and tress in between.

It's a little hard to see, but there is a Buddha sitting on the column with hands on his chest and weird fish-like eyes.
Pagodas like these were spread out over several square kilometers, usually in small clusters a few hundred meters apart.
A very smiling base for a column
People were moving gravel and small stones from a barge while a naughty kid was splashing them with water.

Detail from wood carving on a door on one of the pagodas.
A monk was taking a break and reading in the shade.
Pagodas as far as the eye can see.
I finally found a pagoda with access to the roof so I could climb up and look out. The view did not disappoint.
